Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated the grand Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam in Chennai on Saturday. The Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus, located near Vandalur on GST Road, stands as one of the significant developmental projects in Chennai, and is overseen by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA).
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Stalin paid homage to M Karunanidhi, fondly known as ‘Kalaignar,’ acknowledging his significant literary contributions. The bus terminus inauguration was part of the centenary birthday celebration of M Karunanidhi, who was not only a former Chief Minister but also the stalwart leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus: Features and Key Details
The construction and development of the Terminus incurred a total cost of Rs 394 crore. Strategically located on GST Road under the purview of CMDA, it positions itself as one of the city’s most well-connected and prominent hubs.
The terminus boasts a capacity to manage over 2,350 long-distance buses. This substantial increase in capacity significantly enhances connectivity in both the city and its surrounding areas.
Initiated in 2018, the construction of this mega-project faced a delay in its inauguration due to flooding on the GST Road. One of its primary objectives is to alleviate traffic congestion in Perungalathur.
Beyond its primary function as a bus terminus, the facility features a commodious sitting lobby, a food plaza, various shops, ATMs, bus crew dormitories, and air-conditioned passenger dormitories. With a capacity to accommodate over 1 lakh traveling passengers, the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus aims to redefine travel convenience and connectivity in Chennai and its adjacent regions.
