Manipur: Village guard gunned down in Imphal West

A village guard at Kadangband in Manipur’s Imphal West district was shot dead by unidentified men in the wee hours of Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Jamesbond Ningombam. He was guarding the village when he was gunned down by suspectedmilitants from a nearby hill, according to police. The incident took place at around 3.30 AM.

Kadangband, located on the fringes of Imphal West district, shares a boundary with Kangpokpi district which has witnessed recurring violence since the ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3.

Over 175 people have been killed, and over 1,000 others were injured since the ethnic violence rocked the state on May 3 after a Tribal Solidarity March organised in Churachandpur district in the state turned violent.

Police in September had said that 32 people were missing, and altogether, 4,786 houses were set on fire and 386 religious structures vandalised, IGP (Operations) I K Muivah had said.
