The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is shockingly addictive. There are no two aways about it. Once you’ve spent some time with it, even if it did not appeal to you initially, it would be hard to go back to using a more regular slab smartphone. The Fold 4 is the most refined folding device that Samsung has ever made. Compared to its predecessor, the build quality is a bit more solid. The screens are now slightly wider than before. The hardware, too, is getting a refresh naturally. Here’s a quick hands-on and first impressions of the design, hardware, and everything else you need to know about Samsung’s latest. The Fold 4 has a body made out of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Plus. The outer frame is made of armour aluminium. It’s a tad lighter and slimmer than the Fold 3 measuring 15.8mm when folded and weighing 263g. The Fold 4 is visually more striking too. It looks sharper. The hinge gap and crease where the screen folds are, still, there but they’re ever so slightly more bearable. You get IPX8 rating and side-mounted fingerprint scanner for biometrics. S-Pen is supported. (Photo credit: Saurabh Singh/Financial Express)

The Fold 4 has the same 7.6-inch QXGA dynamic 120Hz AMOLED inner folding screen as the Fold 3 but it’s slightly wider (21.6:18) and has a slightly higher peak brightness (1300nits). The cover screen is also the same as last year – 6.2-inch dynamic 120Hz AMOLED -but here too, the aspect ratio is getting a slight refresh. It is now 23.1:9. There’s a little more real estate, this year, without any big bump in size. (Photo credit: Saurabh Singh/Financial Express)

The Fold 4 runs Android 12L-based OneUI 4.1.1. There are some new touches to make multitasking and productivity more seamless. A notable update is an all-new task bar that now sits below instead of being on the right in the previous rendition. (Photo credit: Saurabh Singh/Financial Express)

The Fold 4 ships with more powerful camera hardware than the outgoing model. You get a 50MP main sensor in this phone that sits behind an f/1.8 lens with optical image stabilisation. Samsung says it can take up to 25 percent brighter photos and it supports its nightography feature that made its debut with the S22 series. You also get a 12MP ultrawide-angle and another 10MP telephoto for combined 30x “space” zoom (3x optical). The cover display has the same 10MP camera as the Fold 3. The 4MP under-display camera from last year is also getting an update with a new scatter-type sub-pixel arrangement so it’s less distracting than before unless you’re looking at it specifically. Fold 4 price in India starts at Rs 1,54,999 for a version with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. A version with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage will set you back by Rs 1,64,999. The top-of-the-line Fold 4 with 12GB of RAM and whopping 1TB storage will sell for Rs 1,84,999. The Fold 4 is pricey, no doubt, but on the other side is a device (and experience) like no other, a potential productivity powerhouse you can carry around with you, in your pocket, at all times.
