Weather Update: Widespread fog and severe cold grip Northwest and East India; IMD says chilly conditions to continue

As dense fog continues to grip parts of plains of northwest and east India, severe cold conditions are likely to continue over some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and north Rajasthan during the next two days, India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated.

Isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will also see prevailing fog conditions.Meanwhile, following the improvement in air quality, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Monday revoked Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR with immediate effect. The GRAP-III was invoked across Delhi-NCR on December 22 to deal with poor air quality and rising air pollution in the city.

Cyclonic circulation over Uttar Pradesh

Due to a low-pressure area over the west equatorial Indian Ocean & adjoining southeast Arabian, an associated cyclonic circulation extends up to mid-tropospheric levels.“It is likely to move nearly northwards and become a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian sea during the next 24 hours. A cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Uttar Pradesh at lower tropospheric levels.

Plummeting temperature and rainfall

The northern region of the country is experiencing cold temperatures in the first week of the new year, with temperatures expected to be in the range of 6-9 degrees Celsius.

There could also be isolated light rainfall in Tamil Nadu, south Kerala, and Lakshadweep during the next 3-4 days, owing to the influence of a fresh easterly wave.

In Jammu and Kashmir, light isolated rainfall and snowfall are very likely in the regions of Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad. Light isolated rainfall is predicted over Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh between January 02 to January 04.
